Hi everybody,

I recently bought a 1958 chevy 2 ton truck. It has a 327 in it, I know thats not the correct engine. I was wondering if anyone could point me to a website or book that I could use to id the engine such as build date horsepower and things like that. I have the numbers off of the "pad" at the front of the passengerside valve cover by the waterpump. they are S106408 and then F09I6HD. The I could be a one.

S106408 = Not sure what this ID's ?? Not the Casting Number, that is located on the Flywheel Flange (on the back of the block)on the right side (driver's side)of the block

F09I6HD = Engine ID Code (see example below)"AKA" "Production Number"

Engine ID Code Example: V0101CLJ - (V = Plant, 01 = Month, 01 = Day, CLJ = Engine Suffix Code)
Another example: T0830CTY - (T = Tonawanda, 08 = August, 30 = 30th day, CTY = 1970 396 Camaro, 375 hp, 11.0:1, TH400)

The "engine suffix code" varies by year of engine for example "HD" = (see below)
HD 1965 327 Powerglide, h/p
HD 1966 327 a/c, spec high perf. (350 Horse Power!)
HD 1969 350 tur hydro trans.

In the early years, they used LETTER for the Month so the "I" in the engine code = September as per this code chart: Month: A = Jan, B = Feb, C = Mar, D = Apr, E = May, F = Jun, G = July, H = Aug, I = Sep, J = Oct, K = Nov, L = Dec

So based on the engine identification code you have... Your engine is as follows. (unless the engine year is not 1966!)

Assembled in Flint, MI on the 9th day of September 1966? and was a 327 cubic inch small block equipped with Air Conditionaing and was a Special High Performance Engine rated at 350 HP.

Why not pull the valve covers and post the casting number from the heads, I would be curious to see if they are Double Hump 2.02/1.94's.

Also, if you can get to the back side of the block on the driver's side, find the BLOCK's casting Number, it should be one of these 327 engine numbers:
3782870, 379817, 3852174, 3858180, 3892657, 3814660, 3914678, 3932386, or 3955618.

Thanks! that does help alot! this weekend I plan on crawling around under the thing and scraping some grease off to see if I can find some of those numbers. I will also try to take some pictures and get them on photobucket of the numbers. It is becoming quite a pleasant suprise!

tried to crawl around under the truck but couldn't find nothing between the grease and just not being able to see up there very good. Anyway I am going to try to put a picture of the numbers on the pad by the front of the right head next to the water pump. If these numbers tell anybody anything I would greatly appreciate hearing about it.

Rico above told you what the number in the pic indicates, plus that overstamped 9453 would indicate to me the engine has been rebuilt, that'd be the rebuilders ID

the casting number you want can't be seen from under the truck, it's on top of the rear flange the bellhouse mounts to on the drivers side - you need to use a mirror against the firewall to look down at it, easy enough to get in there with a brush to clean it enough to read
