I want to put a 5-speed in my 57 3100 which presently has a 3-speed with a 235 six (for better mileage and lower RPM). I see that a T-5 out of a mid 80's S10 is recommended. How can I tell what tranny is a T-5? Were the same T-5's in both mid 80s 4 cyl and 6-cyl S-10s? Thanks!

Look for mid 80's. There is a chart on the Inliners web site showing all of the gear ratios for the various T-5's.

be careful that you don't get one that has the electonic sending unit for the speedo, expensive to adapt. ron

There is a lot of info on this websight about this. There is a tag on a bolt that holds the rear housing to main housing. It has a number on it starting with 1352- The next 3 numbers are what identifies it. Like 1352-145. (the most common). 88 up had an electrical speedo drive & unless you are using custom gauges is hard to adapt like WE OLD says. The T-5 bolts to a bell housing. There were some trucks that had a trans. with the bell built in. That won,t work. Some early 80,s were 4 speeds, so watch the gear shift knob. If the knob is gone try shifting to 5 gear. Way over to the right & up. Go to www.mongosgarage.com for ID's.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.
