The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Fender Trim Spears....How do they attach? 59 1/2 Ton

The holes in the front fenders on my 59 are a bit larger than the bosses on the back of the trim spears so I assume some sort of special fastener is used to thread onto the 3/16 inch mounting studs? Is that correct? Is a larger fender type washer used and then a nut of some sort? The mounting studs protrude from the raised bosses which would fit through the fender holes so it has to be some type of speed nut or larger? These were off the truck so I have no reference. Appreciate any info.

it's the cup shape type of stamped metal nut with a washer-like flange that's a touch larger than the hole, not really a speed nut ... haven't seen them in any catalog, but a standard nut with washer would do

Bill, the standard nut and washer won't work as the raised boss on the back of the trim piece comes thru the fender hole a bit past flush. The capture nut must be some sort of flanged deal but allow for the boss extension. I am going to get another bolter to send me a couple of the factory ones so I can figure it out. Thanks

Simply use a washer/spacer large enough to go over the boss. Double up the washers so to speak. Would also recommend using a self locking nut or Loctite.

I had a similar problem attaching the side hood emblems on the 54 and found a solution at the neighborhood Ace store. This store has an extensive hardware/fastener section. What I found was what I call a clip nut but some call a spring nut. It is rectangular black oxide spring metal with a hole that has two sprags punched on opposite sides of the hole. This fits over the emblem mounting shaft (which does not have any threads) and is pressed against the inside surface of the fender/hood/whatever so the spring forces hold the part in place and the sprags cut into the mounting shaft. If you cannot source it locally I may be able to find what you need at my store.
