Kedso said it could be due to excessive end play in the main transmission shaft. I have another symptom.
I use the granny gear for a parking brake on our slightly sloped driveway. When I depressed the clutch and moved the shifter to neutral, it stayed in gear. Does this also say "excessive end play?" Thanks!!
(We're leaving for the salt chuck for several weeks so I'll add the tranny advice to my to-do list.)

There is enough good in the worst of us and enough bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to criticize the rest of us.

In my case it was a cracked 3rd gear synchro, (i.e. the toothed brass ring preceeding the gear). Maybe the cracked Synchro was the result of excessive shaft end play? I just replaced tranny. | | |

if it dosen't need fixed, break it
