A friend just gave me a 1985 SM465 transmission from a 1 ton truck he once had and will give me the gear splitter, stick, etc. soon. This unit sits between the bell housing and the transmission. I know the SM 465 will fit behind my L6 with some machining of the bell housing and bearing retainer, but I will probably use the original SM 420 that came installed as the splitter will fit it too. I have already rebuilt my rear end including new 3:38 gears. Is this worth doing? I thought it might be kinda cool. I still have a Saginaw 4 spd on the back burner too. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 | Haven't put a second tranny on a 1/2 ton, but I have driven a lot of bigger trucks with them.
First, how far will this move the 4 speed aft? Your gearshift will move back with it, might require bending to clear the seat. With 3.38 gears, and an o.d., your highway rpm will be pretty low. I don't know what engine you have, but you will be below the power band of most sixes. I would first build without the splitter, and see if I liked it.
