Ok Im really confused, ive tried searching on here to no avail. If this has been discussed I apologize.

I am wanting to buy a compressor and gun for spraying POR15 and Primer, I wont need one to do the topcoat Ill have that profesionally done.

But what kind of gun and compressor do I need? The ratings have me all screwed up.

Can anyone explain to me how the pressure ratings on guns and how to choose a compressor in laymans terms!

Or just tell me what you are using.

I would like to run other tools off of this compressor as well.

for painting you dont need a huge compressor a 5 hp 20 gallon tank will do just fine, spraying paint does not require the huge CFM that say an orbital sander or sandblaster need to perform ,you will be using low pressure and low CFM to spray paint and primer.
As far a spray gun for primer , por15 etc ...ya dont need to break the bank either ...check around Summitt, Eastwood and lottsa others sell guns some times 3 in a kit ...1 for primer,1 for paint and a touch up gun at a really good price.
You stated you would like to use tools with your new compressor , now that is a different story ..all depends on what and how often you will be using , if you are gonna use a lot of air then a 220 volt,2 stage 60 or 80 gallon tank compressor is what you want .

I agree with Shop Shark. Why not get a good sized compressor right from the start. Tractor Supply has a good slection of compressors. I bought one maybe fifteen yrs. ago from TSC with an eighty gallon tank and capasity of somthing like twelve CFM"s. This is large enough to do just about any knid of work you want and over the years will not depreicate like the small ones do. Buy once, spend the extra money and be happy.

I suggest you get a 60gal 3-5 hp single stage. These will put out about 10 cfm.
Farm stores and alot of places have units like this at 400 bucks and higher.
If you look at what you'll spend for a 30gal it's not much more for a 60gal but you'll need 220v and it won't be portable.
A unit like this will give you enough air,unless you want to sandblast.

Paint Guns are "HVLP" which stands for High Volume Low Pressure! (sorry SW_Radial, just have to correct this) You don't need 150 psi, but you do need to be able to SUSTAIN 6-8 CFM! (cubic feet per minute) which is where the larger tank comes in. If you go to your local hardware store (TSC, HD, Lowes, etc.) and look at the compressors most of them now have a sticker on them with green, yellow, and red dots next to a picture of a tool (impact wrench, sander, air chisel, air ratchet, etc) and on most of the smaller ones (30 gal and less) an HVLP Paint gun is either in the red or on many, not even listed as the unit is just not large enough to consistently produce the required volume. Your compressor will turn on and keep running right past its duty cycle trying to keep up and nex thing you know its over heated and when you take it in for warranty, "There is a lot of overspray on this; It looks like you were using it to paint!..."

I would do a search on this site for spraying POR15. I thought I remembered that spraying POR15 was a bad a idea. However, maybe they now a version that can be sprayed without problems?

DO NOT SPRAY POR-15 without a positive pressure mask!

It contains isocyanates, which can be/are fatal when breathed, and cause long term nerve damage. Please do not spray POR-15.

If you are going to invest in all that stuff, why not just invest in stripping and restoring the metal on your vehicle properly so you can use regular primer and paint? POR15 is a pain in the butt to get to look good, and properly prepped and applied paint is going to last just as long.
