Yesterday I went to the transfer station in South Seattle to get rid of some metal fence posts and wire. They have a section for metal recycling. There, somebody had thrown away a complete shop crane. This thing was old, made of rectangular (3" X 6" ) steel tubing. It had cast steel wheels on it. I could have lifted my jeep with it.
There's a big sign that says "Do Not Remove Anything".
I walked over to an attendant and asked if they were serious about removing usable stuff. He said that he could get fired if he took anything, and that I could get arrested.

I would love to have that thing for my new garage.

that's the way it's gotten at our dump, it's both a liability issue, and a monetary one, the scrap metal people have a contract - you need to find out where all the metal goes to be sorted, they'll sell you stuff

here all the "scrap metal" goes to a local scrap metal dealer and he sorts out really useable stuff - I check in there regular and can always find $50 worth or stuff for $5

Any good metal recycling company should be able to give you a good price per pound on anything you want to buy from them. After all, they ARE in the market to make money - aren't they?

Its amazing what folks throw out ! ..That crane was probably unused an in someones way that does not turn wrenches and to them it was junk ,
Heres one that will bring tears to your eyes .
when I was 13 my uncle that I got my bolt from was home for the first time in years ...he was drivin a early 50's panel with a built up 327 & turbo 400 with a shift kit an all new innards , well he got to partyin with his old freinds an totalled the panel so he pulled the motor & trans an put em in our basement picked up a used car an headed back to Texas ...after a couple of years Dad got tired of walkin around that motor & trans in teh basement, one day while we were at school he and a few of his buddies loaded it up in his truck an took it to the local land fill !!!!!! .....
to Dad it was just junk in his way and wanted rid of it , NOW FIGURE on that one !!!

Very good points. One mans trash is another mans treasure. If something is trash to one person,it does not make them an idiot for throwing it away.

Jim, The problem is you didn't want it bad enough. You stopped asking with the attendant, I would have found whoever had the last word, owner, manager whatever. The attendant gets his pay check at the end of the week and he's happy.

I believe some people on this forum have their panties cinched too tight.

I almost wanted to say that to a post I made once in the general truck talk forum. But I let it go.

A couple of months ago I was taking a short cut to a friends place and found a lathe that had been dumped. The electric motor was gone and the motor mount had broken when it was unloaded. Other than that it was fine! It has a 6' bed! My friend has it now.
