I have a 1962 261 that I want to put in my 55 pickup. It has a 327 in it now. Here is the problem. The 261 does not have the bolt holes for the front engine mounts like the 235 had. It has a front plate for a 2 ton truck. Has any one used the truck mount(the timing cover mount) on a 55 ? Think I can drill some holes in the front cross menber an mount it like a 1954 ?

I am not familiar with 261s; so I ask, does the 261 have un-drilled casting bosses for the front mount holes? Or does it not have any provision for the holes?

I have a 56 6100 that came with a 261 it mounted directly off the front with small tab mounts much like the factory V8 mounts and I have a 57 6400 with a 261 that is missing the mounts but defiantly use different mounts than the 56 the 57s must have bolted to the side at the very front. I don't know why the are different or what the mounts on the 57 would have looked like and I have sold the 56 motor with the mounts but they where defiantly different.

I think you are on the right track by drilling the frame and the front plate. I ran into this issue installing a 235 from an early 60's car in a 59 truck a few years ago. The car engine only had provisions for side mounts. I don't remember what mount I used at the time but as far as I know the truck is still running. You could probably use a 54 mount or something like a 350 transmission mount.

Thanks guys, The 261 I have has no boss cast on the block like the 235 did. The 235 had mounts like the V8 engine but were bolted to the side of the block right behind the timing cover. The 261 also has a set of mounts in the center of the block that have three bolt holes and look like V8 side mounts. The 55 front cross menber has some holes to the front but look to wide for a timing cover mount. Have not taken the V8 out yet. Still building the 261 and driving the truck. Might have to bolt up to rear mounts and see what works for front mount.

I'm new to AD trucks, BUT my buddy and I just pulled a 261 OUT of a 55 1st edition (it has been instaleld by the previous onwer), and you might be interested to know:

1. This 261 was front-mounted in my 55 1st edition

1. This 261 came with provisions for EITHER front or side mounts, and mmore experienced buddy tells me that is normal for that vintage of engine, as Chevy used both mounting systems simultaneously for a time.

There were at least two flavors of front and side mounts, and not all blocks have all mounts. There was the 216 style bottom-of-the-front-plate mount, there was a front side boss mount that had two bolts and little ears, and there was a 3-bolt mount kind of toward the middle of the block. I'm guessing the original poster is complaining about the lack of bosses for the little ears on the front.
