The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk AD Parking Release ‘D’ Bracket Fix

Well ever since I restored all of the parking brake system last summer, there has been this one little, tiny thing that has bugged the s%^$ out of me. It’s that release rod flopping around in the, what once was, ‘D’ hole in the bracket. Making that nice snug precise ‘D’ shaped hole was the stumbling block on this part and the reason it dint get fixed the first go round.

Since the roads are, as Fred puts it, “white with salt,” and I don’t want to put the old gal through any more of that punishment, we were house bound for the day. So I took the afternoon and made a broach for the 1/4” ‘D’ hole and added another 3/8” of support with a brass bushing. Now it’s nice and snug and hopefully will last till I’m old gray. Wait a minute, I am old and gray, well anyway, last till I can’t drive any more.

I'll tell ya something Denny. I was a tool and die maker for 41 years, put a lot of food on the table and a lot of shoes on 6 kids. I have been retired for 12 years now and have a small machine shop at the hangar. LeBlond 12X40 lathe and an ENCO Tiawanese Bridgeport knockoff. Do a lot of machine work on OX-5s keeping them running among other things and am now machining parts for D-25 New Standard landing gear shock struts. But my hat is off to you. You do some incredible stuff there in your basement. Not only that but you put it all up on your site for all to see and be educated. In fact I just installed my fresh air heater using your pics for the installation. ( I still don't know where to put the capillary) When I get my sub finished I would like to come to Sandwich and see your truck. Maybe this summer if its OK with you. Many regards. Weeds

Tim and Louie, all ya gotta do is take it apart, clean it up (completely), fix what’s worn or missing, paint it, polish it or plate it then ya just put it back together, that’s all there is to it!
I’m a househusband Dave, so I gotta get goin’ on supper for my “big old wife” right now, but I’ll take a look later. Someone will probably jump in and help ya out in the mean time.

Sure, Richard stop on by any time your in the area. Taint much to see, just some old broken down machines and an over crowded hanger and basement. I’m kind of a recluse don’t get out much any more. You wouldn’t be working on that New Standard D-25 that EAA has in their collection, there aren’t to many of them around. In fact a few years ago I don’t thing there were any that were airworthy. Come to think about it, they’re probably the only ones around flyin Liberty engines, no???
Well I’m really not on an ego trip, I just post this stuff cuz I want to share what I’ve learned with some of the younger generation. Us old timers are gonna be gone in the not to distant future and it would be a shame to take everything that we learned with us. Saw that happen to an old prop carver from Texas, sure wish I could have spent a week with him and picked his brain, but he wanted to keep his secrets to himself.
