I am specifically interested in finding out rear axle info on several mid-eighties vehicles without having to actually jack them up and scrape for numbers, or pull off rear covers.
I realize that parts could have been changed, but it would sure help screen out the ones that I know would not work.

The newer VIN does tell motor size but I do not believe the information coded in the VIN extends to transmission, rear axle or any other equipment data beyond model identification.
There is a place where you can order a copy of the original option sticker for a Corvette based on the VIN. But I suspect that is based on records, not the code itself. Its possible that kind of information is available for other GM vehicles but if it cost $40 like it does on the 'vette it doesn't serve your purpose.
