I have a '72 Winnebago 20 footer that is one of the fortunate few on a Bowtie C-30 chassis, not some old wheezing Mopar with backwards lug nuts. The challenge.. The two piece driveshaft keeps chewing up the center support bearing. The bearing pulls out of its rubber cushion and then the thing just self destructs into a molten rubber and grease mess. I must be doing something wrong when I put in a new bearing - but what? The original factory bearing went 80,000 miles.

Do the replacement bearings sieze up and tear up, or melt the rubber? Are you buying name brand bearings? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | Your drive shaft must be out of balance or have runout. The replacements arn,t as good as the originals but usually last a few years. Do you have the yokes lined up when you put them together? You should take the whole assem. to a drive shaft shop & have them check it out.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. I know it's rubber mounted but it still needs to be sort of square to the bearing itself. The cushion mounting allows for the upward motion of the rear end and vibrations. I would also check the carrier bearing itself for correct dimensions and installation.
Gas drivlines (3000rpm) should never exceed 60" ctr/ctr and 72" is correct for slower((2000rpm) turning diesels. Runout should not exceed .005 at the yoke and .010 in the middle of the shaft. If this is maintained and the phasing is correct you will not have a vibration problem. | | |
