Does anyone know how to get a new "Vin Number" assigned and a Title for same?

It is very easy in NY. You just show a bill of sale and you gave them a VID/VIN code for any vehicle older than 1972. They ask for a bill of sale so they can collect sales tax.

What VIN Code can I use for a 1953 Chevy 5 Window? | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 Bubba - Curmudgeon | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 | NY will accept either the VID/VIN plate code (on the hinge side of the driver's door frame) or the engine serial number. The engine serial number is pressed into the block in the ledge to the rear of where the distributor goes into the block.
How does you "Bill of Sale" identify the truck? | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 435 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 435 | In Kansas, with the bill of sale, you give the Highway Patrol a call, and they send someone out to inspect the vehicle. Not so much a safety check, but to see if the numbers they find, either a VIN plate or the numbers off of the engine don't show up as being reported as stolen. They then issue you a vehicle inspection report, and if the vehicle doesn't have a VIN plate, they will issue you a VIN number and a plate, and you take that and the bill of sale to the courthouse, and the state will issue you a new title. With proof of insurance, you can at that time get your tags also after paying the registration fees. | | | | Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 1,927 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 1,927 | Check with your local Indiana DVM/license bureau/county clerk whoever admins that for the state and present your case. I will also ask as Tim did: How does your Bill of Sale identify the truck? Any numbers or just a description? You might try looking on www.DMV.org for info. Good thing its not Illinois because they have really cracked down on that in recent years. Good luck.

| | | | Houston54 Unregistered | Houston54 Unregistered | The best option is to either buy a title from some source and use that VIN on a new plate or to buy a VIN plate from an old junker and use it to get a bonded title in your state.
I have kept a few 54 VIN plates I have come across over the years just in case I or someone else needs one. Sorry but I do not have one for a 53.
You might be able to find an old VIN plate on the swap meet here. If the year is not that critical to you then you can use one from 48-53. | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,440 Extreme Gabster | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,440 | | | | | Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,859 Grumpy old guy playing with trucks, cars, and boats | Grumpy old guy playing with trucks, cars, and boats Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,859 | Not to jump threads here, however I may be in same boat her in Wisconsin with the pieced together 2nd Bolt that I have.

I think useful info has been deleted too as I could find nothing about title laws in the USA. Too bad.
