I have a 4 speed in my 1 ton,And the other day I was looking at it and found the rear output shaft has some play in it, i'm not sure how much, but by feel it isn't alot.Is this somthing I should fix now or is it normal?And can I do it with the tranny in the truck?

Does it have an open drive shaft behind it? Is the play up & down or in & out?

Yes its a open drive shaft.The play is up&down,I didn;t check to see if it go's in and out.

Make sure the nut that retains the yoke is tight. If it is the brg. has some wear in it. If it is a small amount & the trans is not noisy & works ok I wouldn't worry about it. It can be replaced without pulling the trans. It's always a good idea to change the grease in the trans & rear end on these old trucks when you get one. The grease in there can be really raunchy.
