Ok, I'm rebuilding a '55 235 (first time) and the manual states: install the two alignment studs on the manifold side of the head to hold the gasket in place and to assist lining up the head as it is placed on the engine... I don't remember removing these nor do I find anything resembling them or for that matter any place to screw them in on the engine or head?

Just get two 3-inch long bolts the same thread as the head bolts. Cut the heads off, round off the end and cut a slot for a screwdriver to fit. Put them in two holes at each end of the block, slide the head gasket on then the head. The modified bolts keep everything in alignment.

Then take your screwdriver and remove them.

I guess I was thinking they were permanent. Sure seems easy once you get past that!

The way you worded that is confusing. It led me to believe you were referring to the two alignment studs for the intake manifold. I had to get out the book because I couldn't see what these studs had to do with the head gasket.

I don't know what manual you are using but the 1958 Chevrolet Truck Shop Manual actually states, "Place two cylinder head guide pins through the gasket and screw them into the cylinder block front and back holes on the manifold side to hold the gasket in position and guide the cylinder head in place."

This makes much more sense than, "...the two alignment studs on the manifold side of the head...."

As Woody said, you can make your own guide pins.

Those alignment pins also come in handy when you are replacing the transmission. Just put them in the two top holes and use them to slide the tranny in.
