Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 20 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 20 | Hello All, I currently have a column shift for my speed with overdirve in my 1964 burb. The linkage isn't working well at all.I am stranded in my driveway once again, with the tranny stuck in 3rd and the shifter and linkages way off in some alternate pattern related to the coming of the solstace and not shifting gears. This is the 4th time this has happened to me - last time required a rebuild of some tranny bits and the linkage rod I broke. So enough whinning ...
I am wondering if anyone knows which hurst shifter will work with the 3 speed trans (Saginaw 3sp with 7 bolt side cover 66-72?). My major concern is the overdrive solenoid, and whether it will get in the way of the shifter. Does anyone have and experience with these set ups and/or dimensions for the shifter linkages in relationship to the trans.
Thanks in advance. Bert.

This places the shifter in the middle of the floor. It isn't pretty but I'm a daily driver and this set-ups been good for over 40 grand miles. Yours will be easier with the Saginaw. I wouldn't give up on your column shift though. Inspect each joint for allignment and play. You can improve on these joints by installing articulating ball joints, you'll then have no end play and everything will remain alligned. It is frustrating though...I've vowed to go back to the column shift myself but only after I install my 7 bolt side cover Saginaw I will be rebuilding this spring.

You have to do a bit of modification to the mounting bracket and re-shape the shifting rods but it will work fine, mine did. I will soon be doing the same to my '54 GMC and expect no problem with it. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | I adapted a Hurst to a Saginaw 4-speed with the overdrive. It worked.
