guys is their any way to decode the "stamped #'s" on a 235? here are the casted #'s: 3836233(55'-57') F 2 55(above starter) june 2 55'? here is stamped # by distributer: 033804I755Y the head is missing what years will work? thanks

I think that only (3) is stamped/pressed into the block; and, (1) & (2) are casting numbers (not stamped").

(1) The block casting code, 3836233, was used on 1955-1956 truck blocks (this guess came from information found at various reference sources on the Internet).

(2) F 2 55(above starter) june 2 55' - sounds good to me

might this be 0338041 F-or-T 55Y ? That would be a Flint (MI) or Tonowanda (NY) built engine used on an early 1955 1508 series sedan deliver with a Powerglide transmission (does it have hydraulic lifters)???

(4) Nonetheless, it is most likely a 1955 235 block.

(5) A 54-62 235 head will bolt to a 1955 block. The rocker-arm assembly and oil feed connection to the rocker-arm assembly might have slight differences from 1954-1962.

Where are you finding this information?

(1) "this guess came from information found at various reference sources on the Internet." I have put the information (sometimes conflicting information from different Internet sources) into this table.

(2) This sounds good to me because I've seen this decoded in this manner on this site many times since 2001.

(3) Catalog of Chevy Truck ID Numbers, 1946-1972. This used to cost $20 but now sells for about $80 (why?). The code shown in the original post does not exactly match the information in the Catalog (so I wrote "might" above).

(4) This guess is based on the number 55 being found in so many places on 10 micron's block.

(5) This is based on information posted on this site since 2001, and found in 1954-1963 Chevrolet Truck Shop manuals, and seen when comparing heads and rocker arms assemblies and oil connections over the years that I have worked on these engines.

Nonetheless, any of the above information might be wrong (as stated in my post). My hope is that any mistakes will be quickly corrected by others.

I guess a simple reply about what years' heads would work with 10 micron's block would have been to check the block-to-head bolt pattern with the head bolt patterns on this page. That information came from 1940-1962 Chevrolet Truck Shop Manuals.

I wish I had information for 29-36 head-bolt patterns, bolt-tightening sequences, etc - you never know when someone might need it.

My block is 3837004 cast, 05299331255X stamped, and in small casting: CONV1 with an 11 and the J1255 (which is Oct 12, 1955?)

The one that throws me is the head: 3937161 with GM6 under it.

According the the # from the dizzy, it's a '55 truck engine, Tonawanda plant. I'm not sure on the head casting, though.

the site i used was www.inliners.org just like to double check these things. the motor is in a 52' standard box 1/2 ton my cousins husband just purchased
