The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area The Electrical Bay Alternator Bracket on a 235

The PO of Ol Yeller installed a 12 volt system. The alternator drive pulley doesn't quite line up with the other pulleys so I yanked off the belt and alternator to find a homemade bracket that has more metal than a WWII battle tank. And no way to adjust the fore and aft alignment. Is there an after-market or generic alternator mount bracket available? Will the new one (if available) adjust for the alignment of the belt path? Or should I get creative and build a smaller and smarter battle tank?

I'm not up to speed on the battle tanks, but if you find a bracket that might fit, it's pretty simple to use washers (SAE) to stack either in front of or behind the mounting lug on the alternator. This moves it forward or backward the thickness of a washer for alignment purposes. The total stack is tight enough that when the long bolt is tightened the whole assembly is snug.

This same thing is done using nice turned spacers, but the stacked washer deal isn't totally hokum!

Well, I tried the washer routine but the homemade braket prevents me from moving the alternator further forward. I'll keep looking for a better bracket. Thanks for the heads up though.

(Years ago I did a lot of salmon fishing out of Arcata)

A lot of people reuse the old generator bracket, me included. I simply elongated the holes in the bracket with an end mill in the drill press so it slides fore and aft.

Well, therein lies my problem, I'll have to find a drill press. That will work, enlongating the holes, it's just that this piece of metal the PO used is about 7/8's inch thick. I may just fabricate one using a piece of scrap that is thinner. Thanks for all the suggestions. (Now if I can only convince the wife I need a drill press for Valentines Day).

Hey guys and gals:

I just installed Patrick's alternator bracket. I had to grind a hair off the inside of the mount for the alternator to fit. Their paint was too thick. It all works like a charm.
