Jeff,

You probably have a plan in mind, but if the bushing is worn out, the seal will only hold for a short time before it too hits the road. It's only there to keep the lubricant in the box...the bushing holds the sector from wobbling around.

Maybe I should send it out to be rebuilt as I know nothing about it and its probably wore since the box came from the hills of Kentucky.

Jeff:

I just went completely through the one on my ’41. There is really not much to them. Only trick is not loosing some of the balls. The shop manual has a great rebuild description.

The seal you need is a Chicago Rawhide # 11055

NAPA or any local parts store will have the seal. (CR #11055) Stuart is right, you should pull it apart and at least clean it out and adjust it. They are simple to work on, and getting rebuild kits is pretty easy. Most vender's sell them. You can also go to your local bearing supply house and get what you need for a lot less money. Just take your old bushings and roller balls with you. The gaskets can be made very easy to. You will want to make a new seal for the 3/4" diameter input shaft as well. They are just leather so you cut a new one or just install a o-ring under the cap. It just needs something to keep dirt and water out of the gear box. Joe

I find the seals in the rebuild kits to be sub-par, to say the least. Original GM seals are still available and are top quality.
