Who sells a generator rebuild kit for a 1962 chevy truck 235? Would NAPA carry it?

Cool!! Thank you so much for the link. NAPA does'nt sell them anymore(rebuilt or new). Nor does anyone else. I'll definately have to check it out. What's a good cleaner to use to clean the internal parts?

I took it apart this morning to see how bad it was, and the front sealed bearing is toast, as well as the brushes. The brushes some how wore on a 45 degree angle. :confused: I'm surprised it was working the brushes were so bad. Also the there was a light worn spot on one of the inner magnets, and on the spool. Would this cause any charging problems after it is rebuilt?
I'll post pics of the bad parts if you guys want.

I should probably buy one of these kits, the generator in my truck needs to be fixed also as it doesnt work anymore. Even though there may be something else wrong with it, I might go ahead and buy one of these kits.

I had mine professionally rebuilt by a shop here in Cincinnati that specializes in auto electronics. They rebuild for dealerships etc all over the country. Did a great job, converted it to 12 volts for me and it was done within a week for $85.00. Even painted it purty for me. If you want the name and address let me know.

First things first. Without the proper tools, the new parts you install might not fix the problem, and it sounds like you had something rubbing, possibly due to the bearing. You can buy the bearings and brushes at a good parts store, they need either the old parts or the number off your generator. It's important to check the coils, check the rotor with a growler, and to turn the commutator on a lathe followed by recutting the grooves.

You can buy rebuilds, my luck with older generators has been good. Better if you can find an old electrical mechanic to rebuild it for you. I rebuilt them in a shop in the 70's, but don't do them myself because I don't have the tools.
