If you have a canister type filter it clamps to the intake manifold in front of the carb. A search will produce a lot of previous discussions on oil filters along with pics.

This is the instructions for 1953, but the location is about the same for 1951.

I have a weird one(at least weird to me) that I removed from a 216 years ago. It bolts to the side of the block where that little stamped metal piece is,maybe on the cam galley? Its below the exhaust mani.
Thats the best way i can explain it,,send an e-mail and i can send a pic.if interested.

I have 216 and 235 motor with me, 216 bolts onto the manifold which is canister and for 235 it hangs on the side of the block with a triangle metal, right now I just put couple of clamps to manifold and hung it there.

I have also seen the filter that mounts down on the left lower side of the block; does anyone have any more information on these? It obviously was not a Chevrolet option since it is rarely seen and not listed in any of the catalogs that I have seen. So who was this after market supplier of these or was it a GMC option??? I have seen the GMC filters mounted in different positions other than on the manifold. I have a buddy with a '50, 3104 that has one of the low mounted filters and I will take a picture of next time I'm over to see him. Never paid much attention to it because it didn't fit into my game plan. But it's still an interesting item.
It actually is a more logical place to put the filter. With the Chevy AC Accessory filter that mounts on the manifold the horn is in the way when you go to change the filter and all of them I've seen have the horn bracket bent forward.

My father was working for a Chevrolet Dealership in 1950 and bought a new Chevrolet and installed one of the filters that mounts to the block and does not requre any oil lines. The filter was avialable from the dealerships parts department.
But I don't know if it was a genune Chevrolet accessory.
I had one on a engine I put in one of my projects a while back but I don't recall any name on it. I should have kept that filter, there nice in that you don't have the worry of a oil line breaking. I had that happen once. Fortunatly the oil was going on to the exhaust pipe and the smoke caught my attention.

On the 235 that you have, can you tell me what holes on the block that the oil lines go into. I have this canister type also, but do not know which block access points to use. Not even sure where the oil pressure line goes.
Can you help
Thanks

In my 1949 Price Information booklet for cars and trucks it lists an oil filter as option number 237B. The cost was $10.00 plus 40 cents delivery and handling.

David, read the second reply buy Tim, he posted a link that shows you all you need to know.
Hey Bill, I’d like to see that, is it just a folder, is it the original paper work or a reproduction? I’ve got the repro Chevrolet Accessories for 1950 Price List and it makes no mention of an oil filter accessory. Of course the one that you mentioned is the manifold mounted AC canister and I’m surprised that it is not listed on the reproduction. In fact it is not listed in the Truck Data Book as an option either.

Denny,

Maybe I do not understand your post, but the canister oil filter (mounted on the manifold with lines to the block) is shown on page 33 of the 1949 Truck Data Book (RPO 237B, 2.5 quart, as described by olblu49). The same oil filter is shown as a 3600 option in the 1950 PRICE INFORMATION supplement to the 1949 Truck Data Book for 1950 Advance-Design Trucks (and Passenger Cars).

David, here is a picture of the oil-line holes on a 1954 235 block. I assume the locations are similar on the earlier 235/216 blocks.

I do not know how an oil filter is connected to the lines/holes behind the triangular plate on the side of an early 235/216 block. I doubt if that was the "standard" location for the oil filter lines on pre-1954 216/235 truck engines; however, that type of installation does not seem to be rare. Maybe someone can post a picture and documentation?

Marty (delux54panel) sent me the photos below to post here. This oil filter mounts on a 216/235 (to 1953) block, in place of a triangular cover on the manifold side of the block (the oil distributor).

216 oil filter "surface-mounted" oil filter #1

216 oil filter "surface-mounted" oil filter #2

216 oil filter "surface-mounted" oil filter #3

If anyone has a photo of the triangular oil-distributor cover on the side of the of the block, and/or a photo of the cover removed from the block, would you please post the photos (or, mail them to me and I will post them)?

Thanks Marty and Tim, that's the one I was asking about earlier. My buddy has one of those installed on his ’50, 216 truck and as soon as I can get out of the house, I was going to take some pictures of it on the engine. It’s apparent that it replaces the oil distributor cover. That looks like it would have been a much better set up than the manifold mounted AC canister that GM sold and installed.
Does anyone know who the manufacturer of these filters was?

I have looked at this oil filter many times and have never found a brand name,or any kind of a part number. And ive never seen another one like it.
Also, I havent had it open so dont know what kind of filter element it takes. There may be a name or something inside.
I just thought it was too good to toss out when i was scrapping a 216 that was froze up.
