I'm about to rebuid the 307 in my 70 chevy. I'm having the engine cooked and rebuiding it entirely. I'm looking at putting some performance parts on it. Nothing too wild. I'm looking at the holley carbs but I'm not sure if I should go with 570 cfm or higher. Also going to put new manifold, pistons, camshaft, etc... any suggestions on what to do or where I can pick up these parts at a reasonable price is appreciated.

Funny you should ask. Did this exact engine 307/1970 block probably about 1980. This is what was done. Moroso 6 quart oil pan, z-28 oil pump with Moroso pick-up. Heads were mildly ported, exhaust ports matched with long tube headers. Stainless valves. Bored .030 over, new flattop pistons, don't remember brand., rods were reconditioned, new pins, new cam bearings. Clevitte 77 rods and mains. For the cam I went to Chevy and put in what was called a 327-350 hyd GM cam and new lifters. Intake was a cast iron Corvette 4 barrel with a 600 vac secondary spreadbore Holley, Primary's were jetted down to .059. Left the point dist and had it recurved. And even then with 3:73 out
back it got 21 mpg on the road. Nice engine. I think I spent about $1000.00 shopping for parts and machining. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Have fun with your project.

Scott-

Just finishing the top end on my 305 SBC. First, have you done your research and know why you want what you want? It will help you make decisions about where your hard-earned cash is best invested. The joy of these machines is that there are so many options, but that can be a curse too.

The internet provides a world of info and options. I bought a number of components as take-offs, stripped from stock set-ups as pros rev up other similar engines. They sell the take-offs dirt cheap and I found them to be in great shape.

Have fun!

Just did son's 91 firebird 305, finished last week, all parts Napa, cam and crank, rebuilt crank 20 thousand mains, 30 thouands rod bearings, love them roller lifters, just standard rebuild, power hone cylinders, once got tv cable adjusted right she really hauls, snap neck back when ya kick it. so far runs real smooth, think son will like it. was going to try new engine .com for the parts, but wasn't sure what they would send me, Napa gave me clevite 77 all the way through, like $828.00 worth, but the parts are nice, Engine runs real smooth, I'm happy. grin

If you are going with a restoration then rebuild a 307 otherwise I'd have to ask why? A 305 or 350 is better and easier to find parts for and build specs for the application you are looking for. A remanufactured 305 or 350 will only run you $500- $700. You'll spend that rebuilding the 307.
