For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 24 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 24 | I put a 700r4 tranny in my 1951 truck. Is there any way to use the stock speedo cable? Is there an adapter? The outside housing works, but the inside doesn't. If I were to get it adapted would the ratio be close? 3.73 10 bolt rear end, 225/60-15 tires Thanks Picture

After it works compare the odometer reading with the mile markers on the freeway. If it,s not right remove the gear from the adapter that the cable hooks to & get one with more or less teeth accordingly. If it is an electric sender type you will have to do something different. Like get electric custom gauges or a conversion. Both expensive. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Not that much on speedo. In fact, I wanted to try to do my own TV but Bowtie overdrives has such a nice linkage I went with it. Thanks for the link.
The speedo has the mech. outlet and my outer cable housing hooks right up. I don't think something is right. I thought the cable looked like a D on the end for a 700r4, while mine is a very small square. I went to the junk yard today to find the D shaped end to fit to mine to make it work but when I got under a 3rd gen camaro like where my trans is from I saw it has the small square like mine (after I passed over the late models with elec speedos '95) Did my trans rebuilder put in a different drive gear? Let me hear any possibilities. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | If it is different pull the gear out & get one that has the square hole. Then test it like I said in the previous post & get one with the correct amount of teeth. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. When I got mine apart the speedo driven gear was broken at the shaft and not turning. Unfortunantlly I broke the housing sleeve while removing it. I found a website, PATC that had a calculator for the speedo gear that accounted for wheel diameter rear end ratio, and tranny. The only other variable I don't know about is the speedometer ratio. Is it 1000 revolutions per mile? I ordered an aluminum housing sleeve and correct 44T gear so we'll see if I can get it together. | | |
