Several years ago the original motor in my 53 GMC-one-toner went out. I would like to install a new to me motor - am wondering what size to look for considering avalibility of parts to rebuild and all! Any suggestions will be appreciated. I would like to keep it all stock of cource.
Thanks,

The 248, 270, and 302 GMC 6 cylinder engines will all bolt back in with very little work. My preference would be for a 270 or a 302. Good Luck

If you go Chevy then a 292 with 9.0:1 propane pistons like mine. Long stroke inline sixes should have a race balance done to them reguardless which one you choose. Really makes then stay together longer and handle slightly higher rpms when needed. Some head work and maybe block decking. I had my head ported and polished for better breathability and more torque for climbing and pulling. Will soon have a modest 4 bbl and headers into the 3" exhaust I have. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | "I would like to keep it all stock of cource." | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | Keeping it all stock limites your choices a bit.
Keeping it just stock appearing does open things up a bit more. I odn't recall if a '53 1-ton came with a 228 or a 248, but to stay stock the correct one of those is what you need.
Stock appearing makes the 270 and 302 reasonable alternatives, and if it were me that's the direction I'd probably go. My '55 1st GMC Sububan has the 270 and performs real well with that motor though the original motor was a 248. These motors would be basically a boltin swap.
