#36607 09/16/2002 6:43 PM | Joined: Sep 2000 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2000 Posts: 67 | Something I have been noticing lately is that when the engine is idling and the tranny is in gear (not park or neutral) and I have my foot on the brakes, my oil pressure is about 5 psi or less. It doesn't seem to matter much whether the engine is hot or cold, but maybe a little worse when hot. It is a 307 with a TH350. Cold start-up pressure is 40-45, warmed up it is about 25. What would cause this to happen? Would it be a bad thrust bearing maybe, and above idle the oil pump is able to make up the loss of pressure?

Several other things could be the cause,worn bearings,weak oil pump,,,
Try hooking up a newer oil guage in the engine compartment for a test and see if it shows a higher reading.
There is enough good in the worst of us and enough bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to criticize the rest of us.

I have never had the bottom of this engine apart, so I don't know for sure what condition everything is in. I'm sure it could use some refreshening, but it runs pretty good other than this. I'm not too concerned because I am going to be putting in a new engine eventually and the truck isn't being driven much right now. I was just more curious than anything about the drastic change in oil pressure.

I wouldn't worry about it unless the pressure really gets low because it doesn't take much oil pressure ro give sufficient oil at idle.
