There aint one. Nobody knows why but there are hundreds of theories. Mine is so you can put the dog in the cab without him walking in the street. Of course you have to train him to unlock your door from the inside. wink

There was a discussion on here a while back that mentioned there were some states that apparently had laws about entering a vehicle on the street side. Don't know how true that is, but it makes sense from the key standpoint.

On the weird side, my panel truck came with a spare set of doors, and both handles had locks. The whole thing looked factory and untouched, and the lock codes were the same on each cylinder.

Apparently the practice of having key locks only on the passenger door has been going on for some time. I have a '31 **** Model A, and it only has a key lock on the passenger side.

In 1952, the handle changed from turn-down to push-button. The lock was in the button on the passenger side (as in previous years).

Don't know about '52 & '53, but in 1954 there were factory options, #395, that included keyed locks in the push buttons on both doors. The locks were keyed to match the ignition key and the lock on the dispatch box (glove compartment). In addition, another #395 factory option was a matching-key lock for the side-mounted spare wheel (Has anyone seen one of these locks? Please post a picture).

The lock on the rear door of Panel and Carryall Suburban models was keyed to match the ignition key (all years had a turn-down handle with lock in the door, similar to '47.5-'51 driver-compartment passenger-side door lock).

I am new to these chevy ad's but for my 53 button handle it looks like I can purchase a set of locked and keyed alike button to have a locking door on both sides. I hope so or is it possible to reverse the bottons and have the lock on the drivers side???????? Thanks E d ke6bnl So. Calif.

I swapped the lock to the driver's side. Key goes in upside down, but it works fine. I think I may order another lock so I can let passengers in....

Nah. grin

You can get any push-button lock re-keyed to match, it isn't very expensive. I have already had my two spares changed to match my ignition key, but the locks on the truck don't match the ignition.

On a REALLY weird note, my '54 GMC panel and '55.1 Chevy parts truck use the same ignition key. GM only used 60+ of the available tumbler combinations, but it still seemed like a wild coincidence.
