Hello I am new to this site but I do belong to a couple of others . I have recently aquired a old chev 5 ton truck in very good condition except for cab corners and a small hole in each fender and a hole in the drivers side windshield it is in roadworthy shape it had been a farm truck and is original except that someone has rigged an electric motor on the 2 speed rearend lever to switch it from high to low. Now my problem, there is no ownership and thus no idea what year it was made. I will put down all the info I have and mabe someone can tell me the year, motor size and anything else that will be of help. I am located in canada and I saved this truck from a local scrap yard where I was doing some work. Serial # 3178302454 model 1783 engine42224 body serial #251 GVRW 16000 LBS. As I said it was in a scrap yard along with an old truck with a rocker style dump box it looked like someone put a dump box on Jed Clampetts truck and it turned out to be a real mix. The frame is out of who knows what but its old the motor, trans and rearend are supposed to be out of 55 chev the cab while cut off athe dash and no doors is from a 30sor 40s International. If I can ever figure out how to post pictures I will post pics of both.

Model 1783 gvw 16000lb., is going to be a 3 ton Canadien Chevrolet. No such thing as a 5 ton Chevy, in the pre 1955 trucks. Got any pictures.

Hy olddozer and guys, 31783 would be a 1953 Chevrolet 3 ton as Spanky said, it was powered by a GMC engine, probably a 248, hope that helps.

Welcome to the site olddozer. Looks like we are from the same province, have the same year truck and are the same age. If you hang around you will get to learn a lot here, I know I did.

My Chevelle mechanic is at Bracebridge, I go up about once a year. I get up to Orillia quite a bit, in my work.

olddozer,
welcome to the Stovebolt! We are moving to Bracebridge in May, my truck included! By the way, have you noticed the 50s Chev 3 Ton sitting off to the side of the soutbound HWY 11, just south of Gravenhurst? I have always wanted to take a photo when driving by.

I saw that truck, looks lonely. I'm not allowed to get any more old vehicles.

Nice to here and that truck is only 3 miles south of me same side of the road and that 3 ton is for sale and has been for about 10 yrs . I live where the kahshe river goes under hwy 11 but where my 1 truck is and the other will be when the snow goes is only 5 miles from bracebridge . Are you coming up here to work or retire.

I am sort of semi retired now so I am coming up to retire and enjoy life! We will be moving into one of the new houses across from the new community centre. I am really looking forward to the move.

That old truck would make a good photo for the abandon truck calendar that Hemmings puts out.
