I've always have a hard time keeping up with stuff. I'm afraid to throw it away. So.......on a drill press I did this and am able to do this without looking all over the shop. I don't know if anyone else has this problem but it solved one of mine. Retractable key chain cost a couple bucks at hardware store and is up out of the way. Maybe work for your shop.

I've alway's done that.

I don't have my chuck key on a leash, but instead have a holder mounted to the drill press. I have seen others get distracted and turn it on while the key is still in the chuck. If it is loose it will fly out, but if it is on a tie, it might wrap someone up.

I work with equipment everyday, so I am not so much concerned about myself, but others that may be using it.

I do agree with the concept, but tend to worry about others, that might not be careful enough.

In 40 years I've never seen anyone turn a drill press on with the check key still in it. Of course, past performance is no guarantee of the future.

I guess you have never been in a High School wood or metal shop! I remember them flying all of the time and some of them were on chains too.

I used to do the same thing attaching the key to a chain...

Another things I always did was to have safety glass in a plastic bag (protecting them from debris) right there at the machines. I used this practice because I would catch my Son using equiptment without eye protection. His excuse was he could'nt find the safety glasses.

I also use to cover the gauges on my tanks with a plastic bag to protect them as well.

I have a round magnet about 2" in dia. and stick it to the press and then just put the key on it along with the wedge for the chuck. I have seen chuck key's fly around and not necessarly by students, but what is worse is the chuck key off the lathe chuck. Some people just have to learn the hard way, that's why workers comp is expensive.

See what I mean, a magnet...what could be simpler or better?

Now why didn't I think of that?
