I'm hoping there's stovebolters from Florida out there.
I just went to title my '52 panel. DMV used my engine serial number instead of the VIN for the title. They said any vehicle '55 & lower uses the engine serial on the title. Which means, if I change engines, I have to retitle! Have any of you heard of this?

When I registered BillyBob in 1996 in Palm Beach County, they used the door plate.

Every state is different on title and VIN# requirements. My 1950 truck was originally titled in Washington state using a long gone engine number. Oregon didn't like this or the ID plate held on with screws. I too went armed to DMV with books showing that engine number was used and asked them to assign ID# from door plate. DMV didn't like this and they made me get appointment with state police to confirm the truck wasn't stolen and to try to find the a VIN number stamped on the frame. No amount of talking would change their mind that they would not find one. After about two hours of a state trooper wirebrushing my frame (nice fringe benefit) he gave up and sent me back to DMV with a note saying assign the vehicle ID # on door post as VIN#. (Just what I had asked them to do in the first place.) They again didn't like the screwed on door plate so they stamped an aluminum sticker with the ID# to put on the door post. This sticker was right below the ID plate with the same # and was stuck on a bad rattle can paint job. It was easier to remove then the plate when I started restoration. I am sure I will have to battle with DMV again when I go in to re-register my truck after restoration. Good luck,

My '54 came to me with a Texas title that used the engine number instead of the serial number.

I first transferred the title to my name in Washington. Then went through our local inspection process to get the number changed to the one on the body. And then pulled the motor out and sold it.

I expected lots of trouble, but it turned out to be pretty easy, just a string of hoops to get through.

lindy well when I went to register the 40 burb I have I hadd dmv send a inspector out to look at the burb and give me a number sheet or form from him. checked with dmv first. also had the original registration from northern states to show number on plater on cowl. only problem I had was had to find guy I bought it from and get notary stamp bill of sale. Florida is getting like californis they makeit up as they go along. for that matter probably like the whole country. Everyday just seems a litle more weird. I would go back to dmv and ask for an inspector to check it out and justify the engine serial thing. Good Luck

My 36 GMC used the Vehicle Ser # on the title. Had to have a notary verify the number when I transfered the AZ title to Fla. So I would say that whoever you talked didn't know thier [censored] from up

One of the greatest hassles with DMV can sometimes be handy. Don't like what the clerk told you? Get back in line and go to another clerk, you may get the answer you want!

I registered my 1950 which I purchased from NC and they used the VIN number.

My 41 had a Florida title with the engine (sic) number.

The german version of the DMV is verry picky on numbers but they don`t see this 41 Chevys to often

So I made my own plate (with the engine number!) and put it on the door post with 2 rivets. The bought it plus the new 1959 235

Without this trick I would never get it on the street.
