I am changing third member on this truck, replacing 5.17 gears with a 69 automatic suburbans 4.11 gears. the new/used third member feels like it has a little more play in it, I have read the shop manual on how to adjust ring gear and pinion backlash but am looking for a better explenation of what it is I would be doing. I guess backlash adjustment for dummy's is what I need.

The gears will have a wear pattern in them, under no circumstances do you want the gears to be contacting wear ridge to wear ridge which may be where they will be if you just re-adjust your backlash. Personally I would not install a used third member without dissassembling it and checking all the bearings and the pinion seal wearing surface, and installing new parts were required, hope that helps. | | |
