I bought a 54 3100 3 weeks ago. The problem is the last owners grandsons sandblested the front of the cab 3 months ago and lost interest. It was outside and the front is rusted back up. My shop is about another 3 months from being ready to work in so the truck is still outside. I can cover it with a tarp and pray, or what I have started as a temoprary fix is to take a wire brush on my grinder then use navel jelley rinse and grind more navel jelley and repeat. I can only do about 4 applications before I run out time. This gets it to a point that there is only slight rust still in some of the pits, but mostly clean metal. Then phosporic acid converter, duplicolor primer sealer and then canned acrylic enamel spray paint for 2 coats. I will strip it and sand blast what rust there is left late summer and use a good 2 part primer. Would I be better off to leave it alone.

IMO, I don't think 3 more months is going to make that much of a difference. Wait until you get it in the shop and deal with it then.

That sound good to me. It just hurts to look at it. I guess I should take the time I will spend on the cover up and work on the shop then.

If it's any consolation, the longer metal rusts the slower it rusts. Do what you need to do to get your shop ready so you can take care of it and put your mind at ease. The patient isn't bleeding to death, she just has a minor cold.

If it makes you feel better, I was the same way as I was working on my 67. I bought some stuff called right stuff from advance auto and brushed it on. i let it dry for about 30 min and wiped it with a clean rag. Then I just sprayed some cheap spray paint on it and left it alone. I just finshed the doors and when I hit it with 80 grit, I got nice clean rust free metal. The doors were sored outside under a tarp for about a year, but that was it. Hope this helps you.

Thanks that makes me feel better. Can't wait to get things rolling on this one. The slab is down on the shop and my wife has stopped complaining about where it is going to be, so things are progressing well.
