#35796 05/23/2005 4:55 PM | Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 156 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 156 | I have a 59 3200...noticed a wheel bearing seal leaking and thought I would pull the axels and put new seals, bearing etc...Pulled the cover off the differential and its quite a mess in there..needs new bearings, side gears, spider gears, and the pinion had gotten into the carrier housing pretty good..to the point of making it hard to get the spider shaft out...also where the spider and side gears run is pretty scored up..even the axels are worn where the bearings ride..Would like to hear some opions on whether I need to try and find a whole rear with housing and rebuild it or try to fix what I got...

I, too have a '59 Chevy 3200 series pickup and have been through the wringer RE: rear axles. I went through the whole deal and brought it 'up to snuff' but I'm still wanting a posi unit. Yeah, I know posi's were offered back then, but just try and find one. A mid/late 70s Chevy rear axle will bolt up, just check the spring-pad spacing. NAPA has all manner of 'two-size' U-joints to mate an axle to a differential. I've seen these later rear-end units complete with posi, although they usually have pretty high-geared ratios (like around 3.08 or so). Later on, the spring-pad spacing got greater, thus requiring welding on new spring-pads, although that's not such a big deal.
