On an '89 Dodge D-150 3.9 litre V6 if the timing is off is it possible to cause what seems like the starter silenoid is not activateing. Yah know like you have to turn the ignition switch key a few times before it starts? I'm suppose tah be @ 10 BTDS and I think I'm @ about 15 or 20. I do hear a little bit of back fire when I let off the gas completely and comeing down off a high RPM.
Any ideas appreciated!
Adios, Kip

I wouldn't expect timing to affect the operation of the solenoid. If the timing is too far advanced, the starter could have a hard time cranking. Your problem may be the solenoid itself or the wiring to it, or the ignition switch or the park/neutral switch(es).

Kip: timing should be 10 that would make it start easier. Remember Dodges are notorious for starters (whiiiiiiiiiing)replaced a bunch in my lifetime. popcorn The Truth is Out There (GIVE ME THE HEMI)

Check wiring, batt connections and safety switches. Some 80s dodges had the metal can relay on the firewall that sent power to the solenoid. Had one do a similar dance in a '86 5th ave.

Ok I just came in from checking the timing it's at about 12 BTDC, @ 10 I get some good backfire. Right now I get a little tin can sounding backfire, again I get backfire letting off the gas completely at a high RPM in gear. I have dual exhaust, no cats, MSD6A and run at least 88 octane. I like running it a little close to ping about 20 BTDC no backfire then, But alot of people includeing I think it was Chip said to run it at spec set with a light. So I compromised and set it at 12. Anyway I'm gonna take the silenoid off and check it.
Adios, Kip
