How do you deal with the pushrods?

Do you leave them in place and just lift the head off or do you remove the pushrods before removing the head?

Anything else I should watch out for?

Sorry if these questions are infantile, I'm a body guy, not a mechanic.

Woody - after you lift off the rocker shaft [censored]'y. you can remove the pushrods. Usually I give them a little sideways shake as I just begin to lift. That will break the oil film that tries to hold them onto the lifters & prevents the lifters from coming out of their bores. Be aware that the rocker shafts will seperate in the middle at the oil feed stand. Watch the big washers as they drop off that inner end. Slow & easy with both eyes open, no problem.

A few of the head bolts (three, I think) are located in recessed "wells". If your engine is sludged up, you may not be able to see them and wonder why you can't get the head off. Also, on some engines, one of the head bolts is hollow for top end oiling. Check them as you remove them and make sure it goes back in the same place during reassembly if you have one. There are 18 head bolts total.

Woody, when you get ready to put that head back you will have trouble keeping the head gasket in place. A trick that I use is to get a couple of 3/4 in x 3 in. bolts and cut the head off and taper the cut ends. I then cut a slot in the top for a screw driver and put one on each end of the block. These guide screws will keep the gasket in place while you slip the head over them.
These bolts also work well on the top holes of the bell housing for guide screws for the transmisson.
