What color is the interior rear view mirror in a 1953 AD?

Is the radio grill and glovebox cover the same color as the dash in the 1953, is the lettering "CHEVROLET" black on this?

According to the Jim Carter catalog you have a choice of two; a semi-flat Gray-Brown or a semi-flat Charcoal, both a slight metallic. Truth be told, that could be right or wrong but at least they put their opinion in writing.

Beyond that, you're on your own.

Bob Adler's information indicates that Sheen Gray poly was used on all late 1951 through 1953 interiors. The 1953 Chevrolet Service News (September) describes the radio grill, glovebox cover, and ashtray cover are all (except Suburban) painted this color (PPG 33210 - I have also seen a PPG number 27467, but I have never seen paint chips for any A-D interior colors).

Some references state that earlier Tan Metalli-Chrome shades (two-tone interiors in those years) were used in some 1953 trucks.

I have no idea of what color was used on the rear of the interior mirror.

Thanks for you help. I will go with the Sheen Gray poly on the radio grill and glovebox cover. I will probably use the same color for the mirror, as it would be much easier to change to black later, than the gray which is being mixed and shot by the painter.

From the info you gave me I was able to do a search in Stovebolt and a nice color tech chart was found with the very color you mentioned. Now I have the color number and the paint type for Sheen Gray Metallic PPG 31104 or Dupont 202-81407. Sure is nice to exchange Info. on this fine site.
Most bolters are like yourself, they like to help if they can.
I have had the opportunity to travel in California for the last 4 years as I have a son and grandchildren that live in SLO San Lius Obispo. Found the people very friendly and helpfull.

As a follow-up on the interior colors, the 33210 is not currently available, the offset number 27467 is currently mixable, this is from a PPG plantinum dealer in Connecticut.

I don't have the number but I found and used a late 90's BMW interior color that is a perfect match. I was able to mix a pint instead of the the much larger qty listed by Chevies of the 40's for a lot less bucks.

Another interesting twist (no discussion about interior colors would be complete without at least six) is that replacement speaker grills that carry the "GM Approved" label are actually painted two different colors. The raised part is lighter than the recessed part. I think I'm just going to have my paint mixed to match the lighter color and say the heck with it.

So, just when you think you have it all figured out

I have another twist, Bob Adler gave me another reference number he is using for the interior that is currently mixable - DCC5558, he indicated that you need to add flatner to this paint.

Would you by some chance still have the paint number on the can of paint you used for your interior? I have tried locally with my Dupont jobber and he tells me the numbers I found in the Tech charts from Stovebolt have no reference in his system.

Vic, sorry that can is long gone. I had it matched from a orginial interior sample.

The Dupont jobber in CT was able to match this: offset number 27467

Just got off the phone with the jobber for ppg and for some strange reason the old number you gave me 33210 came up on his computer and the offset number 27467 didn't? Anyhow I will be going over to see his paint chip sample 33210 tomorow. Any chance you have the address or ph. number for your jobber in CT. I would like to call him so we can cross reference whith the jobber here.

PPG (Historical Library) typically is able to provide original or offset formulas for more old colors than can Dupont.

Nonetheless, the weak link to finding a Dupont or PPG formula is the experience of your local jobber and how much effort they want to give to finding a formula (from the "home office") for a paint that does not readily come up on their computer system. One nice thing about PPG is that regular people are able to contact the PPG Historical Library for information about modern "offset" paint names and formulas.

I am please to say the offset paint code you gave me PPG 27467 is an absolute match to a radio delete plate that still had a good sample of color from the original cab interior. The paint jobber had some old books and compared all old numbers from fellow Bolters & info I had from the Stovebolt tech library.
The name in his computer for this formula was called GRAPHITE BROWN METALLIC. As mentioned in a lot of the previous post it has a grey metallic champagne hue to it with some hints of brown. The fact that the paint guy was an older man who sold these paints back in the late 50's & early 60's really helped. Thanks to all the bolters who took the time & consideration to help.

That's good information, thank you. I checked a sample from an original patch panel to the color on a GM Approved speaker grille and it too is a dead ringer.

Thanks Guys, but Tim Lederman needs to get the credit, I got the numbers from his tech tip and kept hunting down a jobber who would work with me to do some checking and mix the paint.
