I just got a 1951 1/2 ton Chevy, and I have located the serial #, which is correct. However, the vin on my title appears to be wrong or off by one character. Is there anywhere on the truck to find the actual vin? The only thing that has change is what they call those all important numbers that the DMV wants.
Most likely someone misread a number when it went through the DMV, been there done that. You should be able to get a corrected title w/out any problems once you explain it to your DMV. Your serial number is your serial number, not necessarily your VIN. Most states used the engine number as the VIN through '55. Check on the boss behind the distributor to see if that's the number on your title. If it isn't your engine may have been replaced without the title being updated or your state did use the serial # as the VIN and Joe's correct about the typo. Either way, if the engine number doesn't match your title you'll have to contact your DMV to get their method of addressing the issue. Each state is a little different on how they handle mis-matched numbers.

My title shows the vin as JBA9612346, the serial no is 5jp-h 28282. The serial decodes just fine. I have not checked the number on the engine yet, so my guess is that would be where the JBA number comes from. Texas is one of the states, as pointed out by Tiny, that uses the engine number on titles pre 1955. If the engine number and title don't match, there should be no problem getting the title changed. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 8,351 | JBA does come up correct for a '51 3100 engine #. The # that's listed on the title stumps me, it doesn't come up as any engine in my material. Could it be that the truck has had a number assigned to it in place of the engine #? I have heard of that being done here in Illinois if a vehicle is re-vined.
