Anyone ever rebuilt a T-5. How hard is it. I'm an average shade tree mechanic. What should be replaced? How are the sections sealed together, ATV or Permatex, etc. ?

It depends on how many transmissions as a "shade-tree" mechanic you've rebuilt. Do you know how to evaluate the internals, get the correct parts, and make the reassembly so you won't have to pull the box and correct your errors?

There's a myriad of tech information when you search "T5 rebuilds" and I'd suggest that before you jump into the fire you take time to insure you won't be wasting your money and more importantly, your time.

At an average of $150-200 for a salvage yard T5 I'd have to be really hard pressed to undertake a rebuild as an OJT project. There will probably be those that encourage you to jump right in and have-at-it and hopefully, they'll be there to bail you out when things get dicey.

Its only money. Whats the worst case scenario? You end up screwing up and having to buy another? Im always up for doing things at least once, you can never have to much knowledge and you'll have the satisfaction of having done it yourself.

But Im a square-headed Norwegian and have never done that rebuild so Im not speaking from experience.

I did the world class one on my Mustang. As trans. go it wasn't all that hard in fact it was fun, but Ive done a lot of different trans. through the years. There is a website that gives a complete blow by blow directions. There is a parts place that has all parts for them. I don't have the links here as they are down at the shop & I'm iced in today. There is an o-haul kit available that includes all the brgs., syncro,s, & small parts. I,m with Rustynuts, you haven't got much to lose. Only you know what your capabilities are. Once it,s done & running good it,s very rewarding.

I rebuilt my t-5. There are great manuals out there and even a rebuild video. I bought both. The trickiest part was getting the shift rod out to start the disassembly. I laid everything out exactly as it came out of the transmission. It was very rewarding to get it all back together. I recorded part of the saga on my web site. This was only the second transmission I ever rebuilt.
