For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 202 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 202 | I got my 292 engine today from the machine shop YEAH!!!!!! and it has propane pistons, balanced and a ported and polished head. It was bored .040 over. The compression is about 8.7:1 instead of the stock 8.0:1. The simtest that spins the engine with hot oil for 25 minutes without actually running it has 4 cylinders at 180 psi. And the other 2 at 170 or just above. Anyhow what would be the best carb for mpg and reasonable power? Two single is what I was going to run but its hard to find good rebuildable ones that will run together well. Should I still go that way or should I use a 4 bbl and if so, Holley or Edelbrock? Would a 390 be enough or a 450/500 would be better? I don't want to over carb like before on my 250. It had a 600. Would like some good ole' stovebolt opinions. Yeah!!! I'm a stovebolter. I used one (Carter number 9400s) for over 400,000 miles on a competitors 300 CID engine in an extended wheelbase van. Loaded highway mileage at 70 MPH was about 22 MPG. As to power, the van was our tow vehicle and often pulled a 16 foot tandem trailer with John Deere 950 and bush hog.
Jon. Good carburetion is fuelish hot airThe most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify. Thats about the size that seems right to me. Have to scout the older yards for one or go to Ebay. Can't wait to install the engine in a few days. Have to degrease the used oil pan and push rod or side covers and paint them. A few things to do yet but thanks for the advice! The only thing is that they were a hot air choke or manual one. Of course I have used many a manual choke over the years but my dear wife doesn't know how. Maybe there is an electric choke conversion kit for one or I can adapt one to it. Have to check that out. Henry
