I haven't posted in a while, but now I'm beginning to restore my '51 1/2 ton. I want to pull the 3 speed trans, and I have followed the directions in the manual BUT it looks like there is not enough room to pull it back without hitting the universal ball. I slid it back on the prop shaft, but I'm not sure that it's all the way back. Can I persuade it a little with a block of wood and a hammer? How far should it go back? I do have it jacked up as far as it will go. How far out back does the transmission move to clear the clutch disc?
Any help would be great.

It's easier if you loosen the seal packing nut to help it slide. It should go back enough to separate the U-joint, then you can unbolt the frame crossmember and drop it down.

If not you will have to remove it so the torque tube can be lowered some and them there will be room to get the trans out. | | |

Yes Jeff, I did remove the bracket so I guess that the wood and hammer are the next step. I did remove the nut and packing and it will move all way back, but not the ball. Bring on the BIG hammer. I will give it a try. Thanks again.
