No, it's not a 235. Its a later 6, a '65-'65 292 from what i can pull from the #s. Might check with Inliners to be sure.

There's a very good casting # list on this site.
I cab tell just from the shape of the rocker cover (scalloped on the left) and the distributer location (towards front of the block) that it's not a 235/261 (squared off rocker cover and dizzy is centered on the block). Like I say, I come up with 292 from the serial # (SCORE!! ) but it wouldn't hurt to check another source, just be certain. Perhaps someone more versed in the later 6 can give you more info.

Kevin...If it's a 292 the simpliest way to check is by looking at the motor mounts.. a 230/250 has the left and right mounts the same distance back from the front of the motor. On 292's the passenger side mount is set further back. The numbers will tell, but the mounts position is a quick way to tell. Can't see them in the pictures you've posted.

cool, so I guess the 292 is a better motor?
will all of the ***sigh*** tune up parts that I just bought for the 235 carry over to the 292?

also, can anyone help me with the dating of this engine?
thanks

Yes, the 292 is a better motor, are the side covers about 6" high? The 292 has the bottom end torque of a 350.

No, the 235 parts won't work.

Need the casting numbers from the block just left of the fuel pump, to date the motor.

The 292 is a great engine to have. There are plenty of hop up parts for this engine and parts are reasonable for a rebuild. They water bypass hose on the thermostat housing is sure sign of a 292. The six inch side covers, and right side motor mount location are two more signs. The fuel pump will be in the center of the right side of the motor also. Joe

There is also the fact that in an earlier post you said.

"It is a 61 Apache 10, on a 66 c10 chassis."

I assume that to be info that the previous owner gave you.
If you haven't done so already, I'd get the title squared away before going one step farther.

The 66 chassis, jives with the engine # info longbox found.

I recently ordered a 292, balanced with 9.0:1 propane pistons with some porting and polishing and if you do the same you will like it. They are a great engine. Torquey! Been quite a while since I had one. I noticed the by pass hose also from the water pump to the thermostat housing like JoeH found. The 194, 230, and 250s did not have that feature. The older 235/261 were different. Looks like you will have some fun once you get it finished. Remember they are not high revving engines. But they are tough. There is an Iliner member about an hour from me that has a 400hp racing version. He won't sell it. I tried to see if he would let me buy it but he wouldn't budge. Enjoy!

Looks like it still has the dual master cylinder of the 61 but the hydraulic clutch line is cut off.
