I've taken two bolts out from the frame and the front of the motor. I took the fuel line loose from the fuel pump. Is that all that should be holding the motor to the frame at this point? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 95 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 95 | You didn't state that you had disconnected the U Joint at the Drive shaft - obviously, this will need to be done. IT isn't clear to me what you are trying to do. Are you removing the transmission and the engine as one assembly? If so, then you don't need to unbolt it - if you do unbolt it, then there are four bolts that hold it to the engine - you didn't clarify if you saw only two or all four. There are three motor mounts that hold the engine to the frame. The front mount, and one on each side. I pulled my engine in June, and the clearance was so close I had to unbolt both the rear mounts not only from the frame, but from the engine as well and then I set them aside. Also, after haveing just done this 5 months ago, I would strongly advise removing the radiator cage, along with the obvious (fan blade, radiator, etc) - you'll hate to mess with the cage, but it sure will make things easier.

I'm wanting to remove the tranny and motor as one unit so that I can clean the chassis and also clean and paint the motor. I think I missed seeing the two motor mount bolts on the side. I put a floor jack under the tranny and lifted it up just a little, but the engine didn't want to come up without bringing the fame off the ground with it. I already have the radiator , fenders front grill stripped off. I'll have to take a closer look for the two motor mounts. I bet that's what was holding me.

I have one front motor mount and two transmission mounts. I don't know what year yours is but with the torque tube, I assume it's like mine. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 95 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 95 | yes, 53panel is right. The two rear mounts are acually tranny based. And yes, 2 of the four tranny mounts face from the front, and then two from the back. Sounds like he's pulling all as a unit, so not an issue. southern charm, you'll find that you have very little clearance to lift the unit "straight up", as the top of the bellhousing will hit the floor pan - possibly ripping or bending it. You need to watch this very closely, while having a buddy work the hoist. For every 1/2 inch you lift vertically upward, you need to move about an inch forward until the bellhousing is clear of the floor pan. Good Luck

I have the cab off, so I won't be worried about bending the floor pan or anything. It's a 51 GMC by the way, and sounds exactly as you've described the 53 being. I have a tractor with a frontend loader on it, planning to pick it up with that with a chain bolted at some strategic points. | | |
