I was wondering how to remove the steering wheel on my 37 without destroying it. I would like to re-use it. I have a wheel puller but I don't think it is the tool I need. How'sit done? thanks

If not put some penatrant on it & screw the nut back on a little ways. Grab the wheel with one hand on each side, brace your feet against the floor & pull bach & forth on the wheel, pulling harder on each side back & forth. That will usually get it but if not maybe you can drill & tap some holes.

The shock should overcome the press fit.
Variations on that theme include using a long nut, thread half way onto the shaft and put a bolt in the other end, tighten and smack that with a steel hammer.
I've even seen guys just smack the shaft with a steel hammer, which might ruin the threads... that's how the the nut thing came to be.

Use a puller to prevent damage to the steering wheel. They are expensive to replace if you can find one. Good luck with it.

The steering wheel is drilled for very small screws, something like 10-32 I think. Then take a scrap of 1/4" thick steel with two holes drilled for the two screws to go thru, put as much pressure on the two screws as you think they can handle, then smack the center with a brass hammer. The scrap steel will protect the shaft from damage.
After you get the wheel off, be very carefull with the top bushing in the mast. They are not avalible. Best to drive it out from the bottom using a long broom handle or similer tool. The mast has a small clip in it holding the bushing from sliding to the bottom. I had to make a bushing for mine using a hard wood. Its held up well but needs replace now due to wear. The hooks go around the arms of the steering wheel. You'll probably have to open the "J" a bit. Be sure to mark the location of the splines so you get it back on straight. You'll find more info HERE.
