hello everyone not sure if this is the best place for this post. have loved the bolt an dhave a question. i was reading a for sale ad about an AD style chevy that has had the firewall "modified" to fit a 292. as i love this engine and this body style of pickup truck. can anyone tell me just exactly what needs to be done in order for the 292 to fit into the AD style? thanks a bundle in advance.

The 292 would be longer then the original engine so,without seeing the truck, I'm guessing they cut back or opened up the firewall to allow it to fit.As to what you have to do to fit an AD style truck with a 292:beef the frame, change and relocate engine mounts, different trans and mounts, different rear and drive shaft to name a few.

Aren't Chevy trucks shorter in the engine bay area than GMC trucks? I thought I read that somewhere. GMC engines are longer than Chevy engines and so were supposed to have slightly longer engine bays. Don't know if that's true or a myth.
But I thought I read that a 292 would fit in a GMC but not in a Chevy without modifications.

greetings from n.h. i have installed a 230 cu. in. in my 55 first series chevy. i used a late 60s truck bell housing , home made side mounts,[but these are similar to v8 mounts and can be purchased, seperate mounts for each side must be used on the 292]. i used a short style water pump, purchased and modified a throttle linkage set for a v8 swap that must use a 53-55 gas pedal. now the 292 is similar to the 230 except the 292 is a little taller but the length is the same.the 230 fit in my truck with about an inch between the fancy fan i used and the radiator. and the 292 has staggered side mounts. some comment that if you do this swap , you coulda had a v8. the good thing is you can use a little more modern engine without messing with the stock steering! one more thing is you will probably have to use a single pulley on the vibration dampener on a 292. good luck.

''The 292 would be longer then the original engine''
this is a false statement

i have a 292 in my 51 - 3104 and NO modifications are needed to any sheet metal when installed in an AD truck. I can't find the thread i wrote but if you look at leo's book in the first chapter he states engine sizes. the 292 is the same length as all chevy L-6 motors except 1.75'' taller, and if i remember lighter. some later years of motors were made/cast in mexico.

i have two side mounts that i got from buffalo steve in wash st.

i have a T5 Hybrid 5 speed tranny, so the whole set up is three bolts to hold the engine in situ. the side mounts on a 292 are offset, rubber mounted using biscuits. the T5 uses a stock chevy rubber mount bolted to a box steel cross member 2x3''. you'll need the larger dia bellhousing to make this work w/ the T5.

as you can see and learn to do a search you will find lots of info on just about any subject to learn about.
my clutch actuating arm is home made and utilizes an early corvette throw out pivot arm. So far and this may be updated again but...
seems to be the use of an early corvette clutch arm 1956-1962. This vette arm after it comes out of the rubber boot bends forward quit a bit and has a hole for a clevis or heim joynt fitting (for adjustment) and should clear the new power master cylinder. Later camaro, el caminos and chevelle fork arms are too wide to fit the slot in the cast iron bellhousing, do not bend forward enough and must be modified for adjustment cause they are hydraulic model arms w/ a dimple @ the end location. Too much work to redo/modify those arms.

i have to run a ''pusher fan'' because my 292 has a 3 groove pulley. but it fits w/in the engine bay.
hope this helps

Drew is mistaken in his assessment of 292 engine size. I'm sure he is thinking of the GMC engines. It is almost exactly the same length as the previous generation 235-261 series. It is the same length as the 194-250 family and as Caroline said, a lttle bit taller but is still about 20% lighter than the 235 family. A very fine choice.

hey everyone i have been away for quite some time and appreciate all of the feed back on this swap. i had already anticipated the fabwork required to mount the 292 into the frame. i am pre planning to use what i believe is an SM420? 4 speed that is still in the truck with the donor 292. as for whom ever posted about the small block swap... naa thanks for the input but naa love the 292 personally. retro-ish i-6 platform with v-8 torque and power cant go wrong. they sound sooooo sweat too. plus i wanna build an ad chevy or gmc that will apear original (working/worn) and be daily driver dependable updated to 12 volts able to run down the highway and i would like to figure out a way to get 8 lug disc brakes on the front. (i already have a 51 one ton with 9ft bed located and prying on the guy that owns it to come up off of it so i can make it look and drive a little better. but you know how that can be specially with family (my dad has owned this truck since i was three or four) since about 1993 or 94 it has been sitting waiting for a heart transplant. it went through many stages of storage from garage to next to the garage under a tree to outside in the elements completely to now where i have it inside covered and moth balled. he couldnt understand why i moved it back inside and dryed everything out and put it in proper storage till i asked him to give me the title in exchange for a car i am letting my little sister drive. still gonna take more than that. maybee i will just fix it and make him let me drive it. either way i appreciate everyones replys

i have a solid backround in the machine shop/job shop atmosphere. it would take some extensive machining but i can't understand why it couldnt be done. i just know that i dont have the kind of $ it would take to jump head first into it. so how about this; if i fugure it out i will let everyone else know and vise versa eh? thanks every one
