GMC engines are longer than Chevy engines and so were supposed to have slightly longer engine bays. Don't know if that's true or a myth. But I thought I read that a 292 would fit in a GMC but not in a Chevy without modifications. | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 130 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 130 | greetings from n.h. i have installed a 230 cu. in. in my 55 first series chevy. i used a late 60s truck bell housing , home made side mounts,[but these are similar to v8 mounts and can be purchased, seperate mounts for each side must be used on the 292]. i used a short style water pump, purchased and modified a throttle linkage set for a v8 swap that must use a 53-55 gas pedal. now the 292 is similar to the 230 except the 292 is a little taller but the length is the same.the 230 fit in my truck with about an inch between the fancy fan i used and the radiator. and the 292 has staggered side mounts. some comment that if you do this swap , you coulda had a v8. the good thing is you can use a little more modern engine without messing with the stock steering! one more thing is you will probably have to use a single pulley on the vibration dampener on a 292. good luck.

It is almost exactly the same length as the previous generation 235-261 series. It is the same length as the 194-250 family and as Caroline said, a lttle bit taller but is still about 20% lighter than the 235 family. A very fine choice. | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 | Thanks for straightening me out guys. :confused:I should have paid closer attention to articles I've read.

(i already have a 51 one ton with 9ft bed located and prying on the guy that owns it to come up off of it so i can make it look and drive a little better. but you know how that can be specially with family (my dad has owned this truck since i was three or four) since about 1993 or 94 it has been sitting waiting for a heart transplant. it went through many stages of storage from garage to next to the garage under a tree to outside in the elements completely to now where i have it inside covered and moth balled. he couldnt understand why i moved it back inside and dryed everything out and put it in proper storage till i asked him to give me the title in exchange for a car i am letting my little sister drive. still gonna take more than that. maybee i will just fix it and make him let me drive it. either way i appreciate everyones replys army truck | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 2,031 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 2,031 | ''and i would like to figure out a way to get 8 lug disc brakes on the front''
