I've got a 1949 GMC farm truck with I believe a 228 cu in engine which was run hot by the PO and is now broke. I can pick up a pretty good '78 292 strait 6 for a couple of hundred $. Is there any reason I shouldn't swap this in? The Gmc has a front motor mount instead of the side mounts. I don't think that's a big deal. The length is about the same. I'm guessing the bell housing interface is the same.
Will this work? Anybody out there done this?

The 292 has offset mounts on the side so you'll have to box the frame. Contact Buffalo Steve, Inliner advertiser, You can call Steve at Buffalo Enterprises - phone number: (360).652.7684 (do a search) and he can make you a mounting kit. You'll have to weld it in. Not sure about the 228 bellhousing but the 292 can take any chevy housing. it depends on what tranny you use. I would change to a more modern tranny than the 49 one you have as the 292 is torque'e. I am doing all this as you read on my 51. A new 292, T5, 12bolt etc...

This truck has a nifty p.t.o. arrangement on the trans. to work the dump box so I,d like to keep the original trans. If I can't do this with a transmission adaptor I'll rebuild the GMC. Thanks.

You'll need to build an adapter to mount the bellhousing to the crossmember, or replace the existing bellhousing crossmember with one from a '54 or '55 1st.
