A grinder is for taking lots of material off quickly so 24 or 36 grit is what I'd recommend. A DA or orbital palm sander would use 400 grit OK.

I will say this..even with a 36 grit disc it seems like it doesn't take too long before the horrendous RPM of this unit starts to smear and burn the paint as opposed to remove it. Maybe I just have 'gooey paint'. I'll take an electric grinder any day.

I was doing some grinding the other day with a little angle grinder I bought at HF and listening to the 3hp motor hammering away when this thought occurred to me. Wouldn't it be a lot more energy efficient to use one of the 4" electric angle grinders that only draw 5amps on 120v instead of pulling 12amps at 240v to do the same job? The electric grinder is powering a larger disk and like Tiny says, it has more torque.
So what is the advantage of using air over electric in the first place???

They're not very good for other things for the reasons already mentioned.
If you have large areas of paint to remove you either need a larger disk spinning slower or a chemical paint stripper. | | |
