I have a what i think is a 39 gmc dump truck but I cant find any identification numbers to decode the year or any other info any help on this would be great

Hy bigboltMT, there might be a number stamped into the frame above the right front spring, hope that helps

i believe that ID number, would be stamped to the left frame rail, to the front of the front spring hanger. If not, a picture, or two, would be great.

looked for any numbers on the fraim rail couldnt find any, what about numbers on the motor i would like to figure out what motor it is anyways i think that it might be the original inline six cylinder i also am working on getting pics of the truck. it also has air brakes and a 5 speed transmission if that makes a difference

Having the 5 spd. tranny, & air brakes, tells me it's a Heavy Duty, (at least 450 series 3 ton)GMC Truck. The first 3 numbers from the engine(flat ledge, at base of distributor), will tell you the ci. displacement. Also if the carburetor, is on the passenger side of the engine, it's a Heavy Duty Line GMC.

Oh yeah, See if there's a ID Plate, on the inside firewall, just below the dash. If not, check on the cowl area, under the hood.

found a small plate on the firewall that reads I500 2459 plate is located on drivers side under hood
the numbers on the motor that i could find are 213 5216F these are located directly behind the distributer and the oval gmc emblem is right below these numbers also the carb is on the passenger side, did they put the carb there because of the air pump is on drivers side or is that just the way they did it

I don't recognize those numbers. Did you see any type tag, on the kick panel(firewall) inside the truck. How many lugs are the wheels, & what is the tire size. Can you post a picture.

900-20 didnt see any firewall tags mabey i didnt look in the right spot on the firewall

Thanks for the pictures. That's a nice 'ol Jimmy. Looks to be somwhere between a 520, & 640 series. Once they got into the 700 series, 10 stud wheels were more common. Look at the base of the distributor, where it mounts to the engine block, & see if you can locate some numbers there. The ci. displacement is usually the first three numbers stamped, at this location. The previous numbers you gave are the engine casting numbers. I don't have a way to decifer them.

found a plate riveted on the side of the engine serial # is 278I485
says it was made in pontiac michigan by yellowstone truck and coach company it also had stroke and bore numbers still havent found any other plates know of any other places to look so i can figure out the year of the truck

BigboltMT I think that is one of the coolest Big Bolts that I have ever seen. Spanky if you look at his wheels they look to be six lug hub piloted wheels this I haven’t seen this before and with the air brakes would expect them to be the big ten lug. This is a very interesting truck and would like to know more the numbers you show in the picture are casting numbers the numbers you are looking for on the engine will be stamped look again where Spanky suggest by the base of the distributor but arm your self with some good degreaser, a piece of scotch bright, and a good scraper. These numbers will be on a flat machined surface and can be easy to missed, if you don’t see them try a little sandpaper over the surface after it is clean and dry.

hevyhauler are you saying that the plate i found riveted to the motor below the distributer is not the numbers that i am looking for to find the year of the truck? also what other pics do you want of it inside of cab or a better overall pic or of just the bed
or inside the motor?

on a completly different subject i spotted a old truck in the woods
its the oldest one i have seen but i dont know how to id it it has a wooden cab top that is gone it has a flathead 4cyl motor and spoked wheels also a dually rearend with a huge air compressor on it that is a ingersoll rand only thing i could find was ac delco plate on the starter it doesnt have a grill just radiator i think it was used for an air supply because it parked next to an old mine that has fallen in next time that i go to it i will bring camera mabey you know where to look for numbers on that one it is incredibly intact except for the wooden cab still has tires and the hand crank for the motor you can only get to it by walking, the roads in the area have been closed for decades

Found a similar truck on oldgmctrucks.com, it's a '48 GMC. Says it's a ACR723.

Those casting numbers dont show up anywhere on the lists I can find.

thanks for the link thats makes it even more confusing i wish i could find a plate on the body so i could figure out the year for sure, a title was not an option when i got truck so i guess ill keep searchin i will post more pics soon
