Many voltage regualtors are mounted on three little rubber feet which would further insulate it from the firewall. You must have 'super hearing'... I have been known to have great hearing but even a deaf person could hear this. Way back when it started I thought it was an engine knock until I opened the hood and heard it coming from the regulator. And as I said the needle jumps with each knock. Again this happens on occasion, not all the time even at idle. Apart from that there is no problem with the electrics.
I will notch up the RPMs a tad however.

I was by your place 2 days ago, saw the GMC in the drive and the big Olson with the tarp on it. Didn't want to drop in unannounced.
