I have a 68 Chevy 3/4 ton truck with a 4 speed manual (granny gear) that I am thinking about converting into a 4x4. The truck isn't in beautiful shape body wise and the current front suspension needs a lot of work to make it road worthy again, so I figure... why not. In this endever I have some questions... I can find a front axle easily and can mount that with the steering with no problem.. The problem is the transfer case. I don't know what to get... If I go to the salvage yard and find a t-case that was mounted to a 350T or 400T, will it bolt up to my 4 speed manual if I take the tail cone off?? I need some expertise in this area and would appreciate any help I could get.. Thanks!!!

You'll need to find one that came from a 4 sped truck, preferrably transmission and t-case together. there are differences in the tailshafts, so it won't be an easy swap without all of the parts. Alternitavly, you can check with Advance Adapters, they make aftermarket kits that can adapt most 2wd trannies to virtually any t-case.

Thanks for the response. So I can't take a t-case off of an auto transmission truck and put it on my transmission? What about a divorced t-case? What year of trucks do they come off of? Finding a t-case off of a 4 speed truck in a junk yard is proving to be tough to find.... That's why I'm asking the questions.. Thanks again!!!

The divorced case was used up to the '66 models, it would be a gaer drive Spicer 24. Not very common. About the only divorced style that you might find more commonly would be the ford up to about '77, but it would have the output on the wrong side. One option would be Boyce Equipment http://www.boyceequipment.com/ if you want to consider a divorced style. I recall seeing that they have the Dodge military style divorced NP203 in stock. That one will have the correct side output for the front driveshaft.
Also, like I said in my other post, check with Advance. They might have the parts to adapt an automatic 'case to the 4 speed. It's worth checking out.

Thanks for the tip on t-case for the ford.. I am on a tight budget, and anything that I can do out of the salvage yard is a plus. I looked at the websites that you mentioned, however those are out of my price range. But thanks for that! I think I might go for the ford t-case and put a ford axle up front. This truck is for farm/trail use, so mixing and match won't be a huge issue to me.. If you have any other tips (cheap) to throw my way, I'd be happy to hear them. Thanks again!

Divorced NP205 is the way to go. You don't want the NP203, except maybe to scavenge the gear reduction unit off of it.

If you can't find a divorced then you'll have to pay the $ for an attached case or an adaptor plate.
