Rather than do this to my points Distributor, I thought it might be a good idea to go HEI. I need to pull timing in a bit quicker. When I installed the headers, the mid-range dropped out. Are there different HEI's for the 250? How about a link to re-curve info? Some basic how to? I'm thinking a lighter spring on one side. It's me your dealing with here, so assume I don't know very much. You'll be pretty close, if not right on.. Some have the coil in cap and some have remote coil, but under the cap its just normal HEI stuff other then the 6 pin rotor. Any HEI re-curve kit will work. Start with one lighter spring and go from there. One of the problems I see on our distributor machine is to much travel in the mechanical advance. Dad and I weld the slots shut a bit to limit how much advance comes in, then we set the springs to allow all the advance to be in by X amount of rpm, usually around 2000 on our race engines. We use the vacuum advance for better idle and better fuel mileage. | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 44 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 44 | That sounds right. What I was wondering was if there are different factory curves available. Different T-slots and stock spring arrangements that might get me in the ball-park. I'd think all in by 3200. Something like that.

On a distributor machine its real easy to do. I set mine a little lower so all the timing is in at highway speed. they have them for: 305,351,379,401,432,and 478 GMC V-6's as well as one for the 637-V8 and 702-V12 GMC from 1960-1974. . .

Go through it & clean & lube the advance mech. & taylor it to your engine. Crane has an adjustable vacuum advance unit that comes with some light springs. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Be interesting to see what it does on his machine. One light spring ought to do it. The only HEI I have on hand is out of a BB. Time to call my favorite "Auto Recycling" establishment. CJ | | |
