I've got to recurve the distributor in the '66 250 ci six that pulls my '64 C10 about the countryside.
Rather than do this to my points Distributor, I thought it might be a good idea to go HEI.
I need to pull timing in a bit quicker. When I installed the headers, the mid-range dropped out.

Are there different HEI's for the 250? How about a link to re-curve info? Some basic how to? I'm thinking a lighter spring on one side.

It's me your dealing with here, so assume I don't know very much. You'll be pretty close, if not right on.. grin

I believe any HEI from a inline 250 or 292 will work. Some have the coil in cap and some have remote coil, but under the cap its just normal HEI stuff other then the 6 pin rotor. Any HEI re-curve kit will work. Start with one lighter spring and go from there. One of the problems I see on our distributor machine is to much travel in the mechanical advance. Dad and I weld the slots shut a bit to limit how much advance comes in, then we set the springs to allow all the advance to be in by X amount of rpm, usually around 2000 on our race engines. We use the vacuum advance for better idle and better fuel mileage.

That sounds right. What I was wondering was if there are different factory curves available. Different T-slots and stock spring arrangements that might get me in the ball-park. I'd think all in by 3200. Something like that.

I doubt you can find something all ready made, we just braze them shut and file back out till its where we want. On a distributor machine its real easy to do. I set mine a little lower so all the timing is in at highway speed. Joe

P.A.W<<<performance automotive ware house, offer's HEI's for many application's they have one for my 379M V-6 GMC. . .

they have them for: 305,351,379,401,432,and 478 GMC V-6's as well as one for the 637-V8 and 702-V12 GMC from 1960-1974. . .

I don't see why they wouldn't have them for the 235 250 and 292 I-6's . . .they have them for FORD DODGE and AMC! 6cyl & 8cyl.

There are different advance settings. The best thing is get a unit. Go through it & clean & lube the advance mech. & taylor it to your engine. Crane has an adjustable vacuum advance unit that comes with some light springs.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Thanks smile

I'll snag the distributor that's in the truck and head down to my Drag Racing buddy's house this weekend. Be interesting to see what it does on his machine. One light spring ought to do it.

The only HEI I have on hand is out of a BB. Time to call my favorite "Auto Recycling" establishment. grin
