Most older GMs (pre-73 w/staggared shocks) the upper shock mounts are placed just aft of the axle centerline, basicly flush to the axle housing cover face. Shocks themselves are mounted at an approximate 45 degree angle from verticle, with the uppers pointed inboard.

the bar is 1.75 soft steel and the shocks are at 80 degrees. You just don't want them to be at 90 degrees. You have to plan ahead as to how you will route your exhaust pipes. Be sure to leave yourself enough room to get back through there.
